They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver,
of bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

Immediately and suddenly there appeared
the fingers of a man’s hand and wrote
on the plaster of the wall opposite the candlestick
(so exposed especially in the light)
in the king’s palace, and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.

Daniel 5:4, 5 Amplified

The Persian armies were already at the door of Babylon and were certain to conquer the empire. Probably in some desperation, the young king sent for the precious vessels that were confiscated from the Holy of Holies in the Temple of Jerusalem. He and his nobles made them objects of idolatry. Before, they were just riches of the Babylon victory. To make them idols of worship in a drunken debacle was the most vile desecration.

The Holy God of Israel had designed and commanded those vessels for the most holy objects of His worship. His offense at this sacrilege was immediate and terrifying.

To run from real life crisis into an escape from fear is to surely create an idol to save you. We escape reality and run "to feel good."  What we use to "feel good" – that is the altar of another god.

Many times had we been listening to the Holy Spirit we would have known to move in a new direction or change our position or simply stop. But if we persist in our own way and our own thinking, an entirely other result will ensue.
