Belshazzar when he tasted the wine,
commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver
that Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of
the temple in Jerusalem be brought,
that the king and his lords, his wives and his concubines
might drink from them.
They drank wine and praised the gods
of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood and stone.

The king knew that Nebuchadnezzar had won a great victory over Israel. So perhaps he sought the same god which had granted that easy victory. His only hope left for victory over Persia was with the same god that had conquered Israel. Being a heathen, he assumed the god of Israel dwelt in the holy vessels of the temple worship.
