Our God Reigns
Our God Reigns
Author: Martha Kilpatrick

One of the most misunderstood, twisted and abused doctrines of Christianity is the subject of authority. It is a neglected study. It is an excuse for tyranny. The church that purports to be of Jesus, is one which today functions as Apostate Israel: "each one doing what is right in his own eyes." True authority, as God ordained it, is scarcely to be found. The Divine Order of authority is clear in scripture. We don't like it so we build a self-reasoned case against it. But it stands...as an eternal doctrine and a practical guide to God's will.

God has organized the universe in a divine order of authority.

All of His creation - to the most minuscule part -
is arranged in a pattern of
hierarchy, of levels of authority.
Even mankind. .

From the Beginning, God set powers in place to rule.

God made two great lights -
the greater light to govern the day and
the lesser light to govern the night.

Genesis 1:16 NIV (emphasis mine)

The moon rules the ocean tides.
The sun rules the seasons.

The power of these two Rulers is
unquestioned and unchangeable.
We are bound under the function of sun and moon
and humanity long ago accepted it
by helplessness before it.

We fish by the tides and plant by the seasons.
We know that to go against that Authority
is to fail and . . . go hungry.

To the authority of the sun and moon,
we bow
and live under the protection of that mastery.

God created first, Light. Light has dominion over all life.
Without Light and the rest from Light called Darkness,
the whole earth would die.
All the earth is subject to His Light.

Next He called for waters, then lands to bear seed.
Later He called for life to dwell in the sea and
next, lands that would produce "creatures."

The animal kingdom functions in success because it
operates in an innate concept of authority.
From lion to rooster, order is established by the
right of God-created dominion . . . by fight if necessary.

Without authority there is the chaos of imbalance.
Within authority there is the safety of order.

Authority is God bestowing His permission to lead.

Authority is the organization of His purpose
and through authority His purpose is realized.

At the last,

God created male and female.
God blessed them and said to them,

"Be fruitful and increase in number;
fill the earth and subdue it.
Rule over the fish of the sea
and the birds of the air and
over every living creature that moves on the ground."

Humanity was created to have authority.
Not absolute authority - the heavens were excluded -
but called to rule, created to reign
and by that dominion to fill the earth with fruitfulness.

Mankind was created to have authority!
To live under it by an absolute submission
and to exercise dominion for God and with Him.

And that created purpose lives still in our very marrow,
now perverted
into a madness to rule . . . by control,
or to control by being ruled.
