Prayer is the very breath of spiritual life. It begins with the sinner's prayer and it ends with the saint's final committing his spirit to God. It is so simple that a child can utter, yet it is so profound that it requires a lifetime to learn. There is no graduation from the school of prayer.
Prayer measures the spirituality of a believer. It is the highest ministry one can ever render to God.
In this present volume brother Watchman Nee shares with us his thoughts on prayer so as to help us in our meditation. He leads us from why do we pray through how should we pray to how can we be powerful according to God in prayer. This spiritual art of prayer is open to all who have a heart for God.
The materials of this new book are all taken from the previous publications of Watchman Nee. Out of all his many thoughts on prayer, excerpts are chosen to form this special volume on prayer. It is our sincere wish that this new compilation will help the readers to better grasp the essence of prayer and to serve as an incentive for deeper meditation on prayer.

Life on earth has its many cares and problems. Yet not because we are Christians are we therefore exempt from having them. Nevertheless, God has given us His precious and exceedingly great promises that we may live a life of heaven on earth.

In the pages that are to follow, Watchman Nee takes up these various problems of this life, such problems as tears, the temper, our tongue, and so forth, and then shows us how they can be transformed by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit into values of eternal worth. Instead of being smothered, we may breath the air of heaven.

The selection of messages included in this volume, dealing as they all do with the practical issues of this life, were given by the author on various occasions during the earlier days of his ministry in China. The truths contained are nonetheless relevant and applicable to us today, since in spite of the great changes that have occurred in the world, this life itself retains all the cares and problems which it has always had. In this connection, we need again to be reminded of our Lord's admonition to His disciples, "Take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with ... cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare" (Luke 21:34).

"My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples" (Isa 56:7). "Whose house are we if indeed we hold fast the boldness and the boast of hope firm to the end" (Heb 2:6, Darby's) What is the ministry of the church, the house of God? It is the ministry of prayer, a ministry that is largely neglected by the church today. The church is to pray, "Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so on earth" (Mat 6:9). The church is to pray authoritative prayers which bind and loose that which heaven wills to bind and loose. The church is to pray through and put in execution all that God has purposed and called for in spite of opposition. The church is to use the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ in fulfilling her mission.

In this present book, Watchman Nee touches upon all the various aspects of the ministry of the church. He exhorts the church to exercise her ministry as well as warns God's people against the sin of presumptuousness. How we need to first submit ourselves as a church to God's authority before we can exercise the given authority in prayer. May this lost power be restored to the church.
